2008 Contract Pilot Daily Rates
Summary of Final Results

Published October 10, 2008

Participant Makeup

Over 270 pilots participated in this questionnaire on Contract Pilot rates. A few of the entries were not used due to insufficient or missing data and a few more were removed due to rates that were abnormally low. These included a $50 day rate for a twin-turboprop, a $100 day rate for a high-performance pressurized piston twin, and a $300 rate for a Boeing 757. Though these rates might be the actual rate these pilots charged, the rates simply do not reflect the value of the services provided by most pilots flying these airplanes.

Forty-seven percent (47%) were providing services to supplement their full-time pilot job, thirty-one percent (31%) were providing contract services while seeking full-time employment, and the remaining twenty-two percent (22%) of participants indicated they were strictly providing contract services. In our questionnaires, the proportion of pilots providing services to supplement a job has steadily increased over the past few years.

We did try to review the question, were there differences in the daily rates based on whether a pilot provides services as a long-term self employed contractor, a contractor moonlighting, or one seeking full-time employment? Or, more specifically do the pilots that are looking for full-time work charge less than those that are making their living as contract pilots?

When the classes of aircraft (heavy, midsize, light, etc.) are grouped together it appears there are some differences. In the heavy jet category, if the full-time contractor rate are the threshold rate, the pilots moonlighting charged on average about 5% less, and the pilots seeking full-time work charged on average about 10% or $115 less. The trend continued in the other classes of aircraft though the differences weren't as uniform.

Were there differences in an airplane daily rate based on if the airplane is considered the pilot's primary airplane or their secondary airplane? We did not find any noticeable difference.
